BRITAIN IN TEN OPERAS

British operas are thin on the ground. There are many reasons for this, including the fact that English, unlike Italian, can make for a cumbersome libretto, and that British audiences often find opera a bit over the top. In this first of a three-part series, British

SAVING BRITAIN’S PUBS WITH TOM KERRIDGE

8PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Even before lockdown created turmoil for our hospitality industry, pubs in Britain were closing at a rate of 12 a week. Hoping he can help struggling boozers, chef Tom (right) – whose own pub has two Michelin stars – tours the UK to offer advice on everything from food to decor in this new, three-part series. First, he visits a 300-year-old pub in Cornwall; the owners are just getting by, and their marriage has suffered. He also heads to a one-time hub for the Caribbean community in south London, where numbers have dwindled.

DIY SOS: CHILDREN IN NEED SPECIAL

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★

Surfing can be a very beneficial exercise, but barely accessible to people with disabilities. This is where Surfability UK comes in, and Nick Knowles and his team are in Swansea to build the world’s first fully adapted surf centre for the charity – from an old bus shelter. It’s an amazing feat.

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE: CHILDREN IN NEED SPECIAL

10PM, BBC2 ★★★★

Hosted by Kirsty Wark for a fundraising special, the tough quiz sees famous faces from the BBC and ITV battling it out. Team BBC has Dara O Briain, Anita Rani, Steve Pemberton and Dane Baptiste, while Team ITV is made up of Fay Ripley, Iain Stirling, Charlene White and Joel Dommett.

THE WORLD’S MOST LUXURIOUS PRISON

10PM, CH5 ★★★

Ann Widdecombe steps inside Halden Prison, Norway, where inmates enjoy sushi, share fancy flats – and even record music. Ann, once a Minister for Prisons, wants to find out how Norway has such low reoffending rates, and what the UK can learn from jails such as Halden. TESSA JONES

RIVIERA

9PM, SKY ATLANTIC ★★★

‘I’ve been kidnapped, tortured and shot.’ Gabriel is reaching the end of his tether with Georgina (Julia Stiles, left) in this new episode, and no wonder – surely, the poor man must think she’s completely unhinged.

Her globetrotting quest for revenge is good fun for us to watch, at least…

WORLD’S GREATEST CARS

9PM, QUEST ★★★

Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer is the calm centre of this new series, in which experts – including Ant Anstead,

Drew Pritchard and Helen Stanley (left) – engage in heated debate about which car is best. These fiery exchanges are organised over six weeks by type, starting with sports cars.

THE QUEEN MARY: GREATEST OCEAN LINER

9.35PM, BBC4 ★★★★

Not only was the Cunard liner great and luxurious, she also had a heroic history ferrying troops across the Atlantic during the Second World War – Hitler offered $250,000 to anyone who could sink her. That’s just one story in a film that’s bursting at the seams.

I AM STEVE MCQUEEN

10PM, SKY ARTS ★★★★

Ultimate leading man Steve Mcqueen (left) is celebrated by some modern leading men – Robert Downey Jr,

Gary Oldman and Pierce Brosnan – in this profile, which has the pace of an action movie. Mcqueen’s first wife, Neile, and their son, Chad, provide a more intimate perspective. RW

THE KNEEBONE BONANZA

11PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA HHHH Much more praise and many awards should have been heaped on this eccentric, funny sitcom, set in the world of scrap metal in the West Country. The cast, which includes Michael Shelford as Slick Kneebone, follows the fortunes of the Kneebone siblings, who have inherited debts, a crumbling house and the promise of a legacy from their father, Jed Kneebone. The cast play the whole thing straight, letting the mad, funny script – by Cornish writer Carl Grose – supply the laughs. SJ
