ACCUSED: TRIAL IN THE OUTBACK

9PM, CH5 ★★★★ ‘A dingo’s got my baby,’ cried Lindy Chamberlain (right, with husband Michael) after her baby daughter, Azaria, went missing during a camping trip in August, 1980. But the state didn’t believe her, and Lindy was convicted of Azaria’s murder (Michael was found guilty of being an accessory after the fact), although both were later cleared. Forty years on and using never-beforeseen footage, this gripping documentary follows the investigation of Azaria’s death, and hears from Lindy about the devastating effects the crime had on the family.

FOR THE LOVE OF BRITAIN

7.30PM, ITV ★★★

Julie Walters and some famous faces invite us to enjoy the great outdoors on a trip to Britain’s most popular national park, the Lake District. Julia Bradbury will be hiking up England’s third-highest peak, Helvellyn, while Ade Edmondson captains a vintage steamer on the wonderful lake Ullswater.

THE ROYAL VARIETY PERFORMANCE 2020

8PM, ITV ★★★★

Jason Manford hosts this year’s audience-free show at the historic Blackpool Opera House Theatre. There will be music from Gary Barlow, Sheridan Smith and Melanie C, plus magic from Stephen Mulhern and a special collaboration between Captain Sir Tom Moore and singer Michael Ball.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF: BEST BITS

8PM, CH4 ★★★★

The concluding episode in this delightful highlights package relives how it all started for fan favourites Liam Charles and ‘cake whisperer’ Val Stones; we also pay homage to the nation’s favourite squirrel, and delve into the mystery that surrounds the ‘curse of the star baker’. MIKE MULVIHILL

ABANDONED ENGINEERING

8PM, YESTERDAY ★★★

The buildings in this series don’t always match up to the mystery its historians create around them, but it’s still an interesting show. In the last episode, we visit a Pacific island that looks like an aircraft carrier, an eerie compound in France (left) and a ruined medieval village in Spain.

AN INSPECTOR CALLS

8PM, DRAMA ★★★

David Thewlis takes the lead as the inspector of the title in a punchy, one-off adaptation of J.B. Priestley’s thought-provoking play. Dropping by unannounced, he questions a rich family – including the icy Sybil (Miranda Richardson, left) – about a suicide, and exposes a web of lies.

CHRISTMAS AT MAPPERTON

8PM, SMITHSONIAN ★★★★

The peppy American Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke (left), prepares for the festive season at Mapperton in Dorset. A Downton fan, she visits Highclere, where it was filmed, and where yuletide planning begins in January. (Freeview 57, Freesat 175, Sky 171, Virgin 276)

You could be buried in mycelium. This material, made from the threadlike parts of fungi, is tough, but decomposes back into the soil. It can be used for coffins, insulation and packaging, as well as being a possible building material. In this programme, we hear of some of the many uses of mycelium, and how UK researchers are working on creating a mycelium substance that will break plastic down into harmless components.
