HIGH FASHION – 1813 STYLE
Bonnets were banned, bright colours were in and every costume – even for extras – was custommade. ‘We were inspired by the high fashion of 1813, but we also wanted it to have a modern, aspirational look that a girl would wear today,’ says costume designer Ellen Mirojnick.
It seems no expense was spared
– a team of 232 made the majority of the 9,500-plus costumes used; Daphne alone has 104 outfits.
‘We didn’t want the usual Jane Austen beige and cream,’ says Ellen. ‘We used the Empire silhouette from the time but shifted the palette and layered our garments with flowers, jewels and ribbons to create a new look.’
