FILMS OF THE WEEK
THE SHAPE OF WATER
(2017) 15 ◆ Saturday, 9.30pm, Ch4 ★★★★ Guillermo del Toro, the director of this romantic fantasy, describes it as a ‘fairytale for troubled times’ – and it is just the elegant escapism we need at the moment. Set in 1960s America, it stars Sally Hawkins (above, with Octavia Spencer) as the doe-eyed, mute Elisa, a ‘princess without a voice’. Her prince comes to her in the most unlikely of places, inside the cavernous research facility where she works as a cleaner. He is also the most unlikely of princes – an amphibian man being held captive at the facility. The film looks absolutely gorgeous, a jaw-dropping vision of colour and texture that is also rich with upbeat cinematic references. And for all its beguiling strangeness, it is also wonderfully buoyant and uplifting.
THE HILL
(1965) 12 ◆
Saturday, 10.55pm, BBC2 ★★★★ What a brilliant choice to show in tribute to the late, great Sean Connery (above). This gritty Second World War prison drama couldn’t be more different from the full-colour action and seduction of the Bond films, and showcases the actor’s commitment to serious dramatic roles. Joe Roberts (Connery) is the former Sergeant Major sent to a military prison in the Libyan desert for insubordination. He’s the star of the film, especially in the way the camera lingers on his striking mustachioed face, but he’s also part of an ensemble, one of many at the mercy of the sadistic camp authorities, forced to sweat and suffer in punishing heat. Showing in a double bill with The Untouchables (at 9pm), for which Connery won an Oscar, this is a tribute to his talent, not just his undisputed star quality.

PRINCESS ALICE: THE ROYALS’ GREATEST SECRET
8.35PM, CH5 ★★★★
The Queen’s mother-in-law, Alice of Battenberg (right), is a fascinating figure; she was born into privilege, but her atypical royal life was marked by a series of dramatic events, not least war, exile and mental illness. As this definitive documentary reveals, Alice overcame her personal struggles to work for the Red Cross and to devote herself to helping others. Hers was a nomadic life – often solitary and without luxury – that was to end, very quietly, with her son, Prince Philip, at Buckingham Palace, in 1969.
SCOTLAND: MY LIFE IN THE WILD
6PM, CH4 ★★★★ Hamza Yassin has an enviable job: he makes his living from the wonderful wildlife footage, featured here, that he films on his doorstep. It helps that his doorstep is the Ardnamurchan peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, and he shares this stunning location with pine martens, red deer, puffins and white-tailed sea eagles.
ROSES VS QUALITY STREET: CHOCOLATE BOX WARS
7.40PM, CH5 ★★★
Stacked high in supermarkets, those colourful confections are tempting us to indulge in their jewel-like variety. But where do your loyalties lie? This lighthearted one-off explores the Christmas craze that began some 80 years ago, and asks pressing questions such as: Are they really getting smaller?
BRITAIN’S MOST HISTORIC TOWNS
8.30PM, CH4 ★★★★
This week, Alice Roberts is in ‘Auld Reekie’ to learn how the beautiful city of Edinburgh got this unfortunate nickname. In the New Town, Alice finds out how the city was remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries, and there’s a celebration of Scottishness at Abbotsford. SIMONE ANDREWS

CHRISTMAS IN STORYLAND
9.30AM, 5PM, CBEEBIES ★★★★ There aren’t many pantos about this year, but the Cbeebies festive song-and-dance spectacular is still going strong. This year’s tale is the story of an elf (Andy Day, left) who is trying to fill an important Christmas order, and features Justin Fletcher as a yodelling yeti.
LOVEJOY CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
4PM, DRAMA ★★★
Ian Mcshane’s fantastically over-the-top performance as the antiques-seeking rogue still makes for great entertainment. In this festive special from 1992 – written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais – Lovejoy (Mcshane, left) travels to Prague in search of diamonds.
RAISED BY WOLVES
9PM, SKY ATLANTIC ★★★★
The first of this new triple bill of the grandly bleak US sci-fi drama is directed by Luke Scott, the son of Ridley. Tonight, android Father becomes concerned for the future of the children he protects, while his counterpart, Mother (Amanda Collin, left), uncovers hidden memories.
THE VALHALLA MURDERS
9PM, BBC4 ★★★★
The case may be over in the final double bill, but the drama is far from finished. Kata (Nina Dogg Filippusdottir, left) has a realisation about Magnus that changes the situation drastically, and she is determined to push ahead with an investigation. Can she count on a traumatised Arnar for help?
COLDPLAY: A HEAD FULL OF DREAMS
★★★★ ‘Without the other three, each of us would be screwed,’ says Chris Martin (left) of what the band members mean to each other. Part concert film from Coldplay’s world tour, part account of their rise – and with footage filmed over 20 years – this makes uplifting viewing whatever your music taste.
THE SHADOWS AT SIXTY
10.30PM, BBC4 ★★★★
Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch and Cliff Richard (left) reflect on the early days of the group that started life as Cliff’s backing band. There are plenty of magical moments along the way: one is the arrival of Hank’s Fender Stratocaster, said to be the first of its kind in the UK. ROBIN WIGGS
