MORTIMER & WHITEHOUSE: GONE CHRISTMAS FISHING

8.10PM, BBC2 ★★★★

For this hour-long special, Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer (right) are on Bob’s home turf in Middlesbrough, fishing the Esk and the Tees, and as ever, their banter is every bit as important as the catch of the day. They will be joined by fellow Middlesbrough lad Chris Rea, as well as other surprise guests, and Bob will also be rustling up a turkey dinner for two, with all the trimmings. How can Paul – who feels the magic of the season has been lost – possibly resist the Christmas spirit with all this on offer?

I’M A CELEBRITY… A CASTLE STORY

8PM, ITV ★★★

Ant and Dec are on hand to deliver the verdict on this year’s tweaked and relocated version of the popular celebrity survival show.

Along with the highs and lows from Gwrych Castle in Wales, there will be ‘hard-hitting’ analysis of the contestants’ every move, and the road that led to the castle crown.

SMALL AXE: EDUCATION

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★

The final film in Steve Mcqueen’s eye-opening anthology series charts an unofficial policy of segregation in London schools during the 1970s. Kingsley (Kenyah Sandy) is a bright young lad who is singled out and sent to a ‘special needs’ school, where education is the very last thing that the children will receive.

DES O’CONNOR: THE ULTIMATE ENTERTAINER

9PM, ITV ★★★★

Des O’connor was a true all-rounder who sang, joked and hosted his way through a career spanning nearly 70 years. This show, which began filming earlier this year to mark his retirement, features unseen home movies and fond tributes from his family and show business friends. SA

DANNY BAKER’S CHRISTMAS HITS

6.30PM, SKY ARTS ★★★

In a deeper dive than the average round-up of festive music, Baker (left) celebrates what he feels is an undervalued genre, and highlights examples that radio playlists ignore, such as Bob Dylan’s version of Must Be Santa. Sometimes, you can see why they’ve fallen by the wayside.

S.W.A.T.

9PM, SKY ONE ★★★ The team hunt drug smugglers who crash a plane in LA in this exciting new episode, which was intended as the penultimate part of season three, but serves as a finale after filming was cut short by the pandemic. Hondo (Shemar Moore, left) and the gang won’t be stopped by a virus for long, though – there will be a season four.

DAVID BLAINE: REAL OR MAGIC?

10PM, SKY ONE ★★★★

David Blaine started out as a street magician, and returns to those roots in a mesmerising one-off special from 2013. He stuns both the public and famous faces, such as Stephen Hawking, Will Smith, Harrison Ford and Olivia Wilde (left, with Blaine), with his mind-bending illusions.

THE SKY AT NIGHT

10.30PM, BBC4 ★★★

As we approach the end of the decade, Chris Lintott and Maggie Aderin-pocock (left) look back on what we’ve learned from astronomy since 2010, and what we could learn in the next ten years. Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal and always a fascinating presence, is on hand to help with that over the hour.

THE SOUTH BANK SHOW

10.45PM, SKY ARTS ★★★

Melvyn Bragg talks to Simon Armitage (left), the 21st poet laureate. Much of Armitage’s work is inspired by his west Yorkshire roots, and this ‘kitchen sink poet’ explores those here, visiting his childhood home and recalling a poem he wrote that didn’t make the cut at school. That still seems to hurt. RW
