Chances are, they’ll also get pickled themselves before they pack in ice-swimming, saunas and snowmobile racing.

Christmas is a crazy time of year in plenty of professions, but its demands have taken on a particularly legendary status among the staff of the London hotel. Recent hire Michael – once an actor, now a butler – was sceptical of how hard it would actually be, but has realised his new colleagues were right: ‘It’s horrendous… in a very charming and exciting and magical way.’ The staff, including head butler Sean (right), stop to reflect on the pressures and pleasures of yuletide in this cocklewarming one-off. When they have a spare moment, that is.

Nadiya Hussain’s natural enthusiasm is a big part of why she’s so good to watch on TV, and her excitement over the Hollywood sign sets the tone for tonight’s concluding part. She is in California, where the varied immigrant cuisine provides plenty more opportunities for enthusiasm.

Carey Mulligan is Bathsheba Everdene, the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s classic novel. It’s a romance, but much more, presented here in a carefully abridged form that emphasises Bathsheba’s capability, not just her attractiveness. Michael Sheen co-stars as Boldwood.
