IN HIS OWN WORDS: George Clooney
With George, 59, starring as scientist Augustine in the post-apocalyptic sci-fi film
The Midnight Sky (Netflix), we look at some things he had to say about his life and career…
On making an inappropriate confession in church – he was once an altar boy – when he was just eight years old: ‘I would confess to committing adultery because I thought it meant acting like an adult.’
On his acting influences: ‘Spencer Tracy was my hero. They used to say he played the same guy in all his films, but that was OK because he was so likeable. I steal from him all the time. You don’t notice because I don’t do it well!’
On his proposal to second wife Amal, whom he married in 2014: ‘Literally, I dropped it on her. And she just kept saying “Wow” – completely unexpected. We just sat there and finally I said, “Listen, I’m 52 and I’ve been on my knee now for about 28 minutes, so I gotta get an answer out of this or I’m going to throw a hip out. I might not be able to stand back up.”’
On his suitability for entering politics:
‘Run for office? No. I’ve slept with too many women, I’ve done too many drugs, and
I’ve been to too many parties.’
On his privacy: ‘I don’t like to share my personal life… It wouldn’t be personal if I shared it.’
On his love of coffee: ‘If you don’t drink coffee, I am suspicious of your character and will not invite you to my Italian lake home.’
