8PM, BBC4 ★★★ The first half of the Christmas

2007 adaptation, with William Miller in the lead. It is entertaining fare, but don’t go expecting grit – Tom Hardy’s Bill Sikes is light on menace, while Timothy Spall’s Fagin (left) is more of a harmless eccentric than a sinister exploiter of children. Concludes tomorrow.
