CALL THE MIDWIFE

7.40PM, BBC1 ★★★★

Step through a portal into a bygone age for a warm 90 minutes of life in and around Nonnatus House. There is peril inside this bubble, of course, but also the distinct impression that everything will probably be all right in the end, and that’s what’s so lovely about it all. The convent is under financial threat tonight, which is giving Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) a headache, while in the outside world, a circus faces disaster and, for pure comic relief, Trixie (Helen George, right, centre) faces awkward questions at a dating agency.

ZOG AND THE FLYING DOCTORS

2.35PM, BBC1 ★★★★★ Lenny Henry narrated this

Zog sequel from under his duvet during lockdown, and what’s so great about it is how broad the appeal is – Julia Donaldson’s book is for children, but the humour here is universal. So, sit back, enjoy, and see if you can spot where they hid the Gruffalo this year.

QUENTIN BLAKE’S CLOWN

7.40PM, CH4 ★★★★

A new animation based on Quentin Blake’s book, in which atoyclownisthrownaway and goes on a big adventure to find a new home. It’s narrated by Helena Bonham Carter, who is an entirely suitable choice for such a quirky tale, although it’s interesting to remember that the original book told its story with no words at all.

BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR

8PM, ITV ★★★★

BGT has been on our screens since 2006 and tonight, the cream of that 14-year crop returns to the roost for an allguns-blazing variety show. And there are two intriguing twists – the acts will be working together, and the judges will be stepping into the limelight, too. Hold on to your hats. RW
