WHO IS? Joel Dommett

The comedian and host of The Masked Singer (7pm, ITV), Joel, 35, is an increasingly familiar face on television. Here’s his story so far…

-

● Born on June 8, 1985, in Rockhampton, Gloucestershire, Joel was in a nu-metal band called Psirus (‘with a silent P – amazing’) when he was a teenager. His very brief time with the band provided source material for his Finding Emo stand-up show.

● He moved to London when he was 19 and joined the National Youth Theatre, landing early acting roles in Casualty (2004) and Inspector Lynley (2007), as well as the 2008 movie The Edge Of Love. He is perhaps best-known for Skins (2010), in which he played DC Sweeney in three episodes. He also starred in sitcom Popatron (2010).

● Joel’s first stand-up gig was in a bar in Los Angeles. He paid $10 to go on stage, and was last on: ‘All the acts left after their spot, so I performed to an empty room.’ His gigs attract considerably bigger audiences these days.

● He started appearing regularly on TV, hosting the Made In Chelsea discussion show Live In Chelsea from 2011, costarring in BBC3’S Impractical Jokers (2012-14) and captaining one of the teams on ITV2’S Reality Bites in 2015.

● The year 2016 was big for Joel. Not only did he meet his future wife, model Hannah Cooper, but he also entered the I’m A Celebrity jungle, and finished as runner-up to Scarlett Moffatt.
