The Nun’s Story (1959) Audrey Hepburn (left) stars in this drama, inspired by the life of Marie Louise Habets. Hepburn befriended Habets, who would nurse the actress back to health after she fell from her horse while filming a western in 1960. Rent or buy on Youtube.

Black Narcissus (1947) Powell and Pressburge­r’s Oscar-winning film version stars Deborah Kerr as Clodagh. Available on Britbox. Kerr got back in the habit for 1957’s Heaven Knows, Mr Allison, opposite Robert Mitchum. Rent or buy on Amazon, Apple TV, Youtube.

Sister Act (1992) In this sing-along musical hit, Whoopi Goldberg (right) is the lively lounge

singer who takes refuge from the mob in a convent. Whoopi will return for the recently announced second sequel. The first two films are available on Sky/now TV.

Call The Midwife (2012-present) In London’s East End from the 1950s onwards, the nuns of Nonnatus House work alongside nurse midwives in this hit period drama. All episodes available on BBC iplayer.

The Nun (2018) Sisters get sinister in this creepfest from the popular Conjuring horror franchise. Available on Amazon Prime.
