1942 The year he was born, at 69 Dover Street in Anderston, Glasgow, ‘on the linoleum, three floors up’.

3 The number of albums released by his folk rock band, The Humblebums, formed in 1965; Billy left in 1971 to embark on a solo career. He has released dozens of albums of music and comedy recordings to date.

1989 The year he married the actress turned psychologi­st Pamela Stephenson – Billy credits her, along with Michael Caine, with helping him to give up booze. He became teetotal in 1985 and lives, with Pamela, in Florida.

2012 The year he was presented with Bafta Scotland’s Outstandin­g Contributi­on Award. He had been nominated earlier for his performanc­e as Queen Victoria’s loyal ghillie, John Brown, in Mrs Brown (1997).

2017 The year he was knighted, a few weeks before his 75th birthday. Three portraits of Billy were also unveiled in Glasgow that year to celebrate his birthday.
