As it begins a repeat run from the start (2.20pm, Drama), here’s a quick refresher on the popular military drama and its two most famous stars…

● Created by Lucy Gannon, who once worked as a military policewoman, the show launched in June 1991 and ran for seven series, with a total of 82 episodes, ending in December 1997.

● Soldier, Soldier followed the daily lives of members of the King’s Fusiliers (later the King’s Own Fusiliers), a fictional infantry regiment of the British Army that was inspired by the real Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

● At the time the show was set – the early to mid-1990s – the British Army was being downsized. The drama represented these changes, as well as detailing the soldiers’ relationships and personal struggles.

● Robson Green and Jerome Flynn – as Fusilier Dave Tucker and Sergeant Paddy Garvey (centre) – were the breakout stars. They sang Unchained Melody in an episode from series four, and it became the bestselling single of 1995. As pop duo Robson & Jerome, they released two studio albums and two compilation albums.

● Other well-known cast members include: Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives), Annabelle Apsion

(Call The Midwife), Lesley Manville (Mum), Samantha Morton (Harlots), Lee Ingleby

(The A Word) and Denise Welch( Waterloo Road).
