PICK OF THE DAY
DEATH IN PARADISE
9PM, BBC1 ★★★★
We are back on the island of Saint Marie for more winter sun and suspicion as DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little, right) and his team solve murder mysteries. In this opener to the new, tenth series, a young local TV reporter is found dead in her pool, and the finger is pointed at the show’s host, Garfield Tourne (Patrick Robinson), and his reporter daughter, Helene (Shalisha James-davis). Was there rivalry at play here, or did someone else have reason to kill her? Neville, when he’s not panicking about getting sick, is determined to find out as a familiar face returns…
POOCH PERFECT
8PM, BBC1 ★★★
There are home and garden shows, human makeovers and now, a ‘transfurmation’ show… with dogs. Pup-lover Sheridan Smith hosts the unique new series that pits dog stylists against each other in challenges, culminating in a strut down the ‘dogwalk’ to be judged each week. It’s a bit silly, but also lots of fun.
GEORGE CLARKE’S AMAZING SPACES
8PM, CH4 ★★★ The fascinating show in which George Clarke takes a look at how tiny spaces are magically transformed returns for a new series. This week, he meets a couple with the noble goal of turning a fire engine into a bar to raise money for charity, and a 23-year-old who is building a shepherd’s hut fully from scratch – even the screws!
EGYPT’S GREAT MUMMIES: UNWRAPPED WITH BETTANY HUGHES
9PM, CH5 ★★★★
The historian tells the stories of her ten favourite mummies, each with intriguing secrets hidden for centuries. Bettany is as engaging as ever as she looks at the faces of these ancient Egyptians, with the help of cutting-edge scanning technology. TESSA JONES
CLOSING GAMBIT
8.20PM, PBS AMERICA ★★★
The Soviets placed huge stock in chess, and the price for a player’s failure could be high. This interesting new documentary explores the clash between two very different Russianborn players in 1978, the grouchy traditionalist Viktor Korchnoi and the youthful Anatoly Karpov (left).
9-1-1
9PM, PICK ★★★★
The Freeview premiere for a US emergency services drama that plays like Casualty on steroids. Tonight, we meet the characters, and they include 9-1-1 operator Abby (Connie Britton, left), who also cares for her sick mother, and fearsome police officer Athena, who is about to find out that her husband is gay.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION: 20 YEARS AND COUNTING
9PM, MORE4 ★★★
Kirstie Allsopp (left) and Phil Spencer mark two decades of their property show with this series of reminiscences. They begin with a look back at the challenges of finding homes that allow multiple generations to live under one roof.
