FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD
(2018) 12 ◆ Sunday, 5.35pm, ITV ★★★
Harry Potter fans have been richly rewarded in this new franchise, set many decades before Harry’s arrival at Hogwarts. As the story continues in this sequel, dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald wants to establish his kind’s supremacy over all mere Muggles (i.e., non-magical mortals) and for that, he needs a mysterious young man called Credence (Ezra Miller). Tweedy ‘magizoologist’ Newt Scamander is reluctantly tasked with finding Credence, and has an awkward reunion with Tina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston, above, with Eddie Redmyane as Newt). Together, they have many magical encounters through this brilliantly realised world as they prepare to face the dark forces of Grindelwald.
LADIES OF THE CHORUS (1948)

Sony Classic ★★★
Normal programming resumes on Sony’s classic movie channel on Tuesday after being devoted to Christmas films over the festive period – and from this issue of Weekend, you will find the channel in our listings (see page 67). It offers a selection of vintage films from the 1940s onward, including this musical romance, which gave Marilyn Monroe (above, with Adele Jergens) her first leading role. It’s by no means Monroe’s best film – a frothy tale of a chorus girl making it in high society – but it does provide a glimpse of what was to come. If you’re in the mood for more rags-to-riches musical romance, Barbra Streisand’s Funny Girl follows at 2.05pm, and on Thursday (11.10pm), Rita Hayworth and
Gene Kelly star in 1944’s Cover Girl.
