He worries what will happen to his horse, who, over the years, has worked with George, moving cargo up and down the canals. George knows only too well the fate that awaits most working horses, but is determined it will not happen to his own animal. Timothy West plays the old bargee in this drama written by David Pownall.

MICHAEL PALIN’S RADIO ADVENTURES

11AM, 9PM, RADIO 4 EXTRA ★★★★ Michael Palin once had a go at being a DJ for the BBC, but it didn’t quite work out. In this three-part series, which was first broadcast in 2017, ‘Britain’s nicest man’ talks to John Mccarthy about his love of radio and how it has had a profound effect on his life and career. This opening instalment covers the Monty Python years, and includes plenty of archive material from Michael’s extensive radio work.

This glorious concert of music by Haydn, Mozart and Schubert was recorded a year ago, to the day, by the Vienna Philharmon­ic. It closes with Beethoven’s mighty Fifth Symphony, which begins with the most famous four notes in history. SJ
