PICK OF THE DAY
THE PEMBROKESHIRE MURDERS
9PM, ITV ★★★★ Hollywood star Luke Evans returns to UK TV – and to his Welsh roots – for ITV’S latest true-crime drama, which unfolds over three nights. Evans is Det Supt Steve Wilkins (right), recently returned from London, reconnecting with his children and looking to restore the local police’s reputation via a cold case, by proving a thief, John Cooper (Keith Allen), was actually a serial killer. You know you’re in safe hands from the opening scenes, which set the tone with wit and efficiency, and Evans is a reassuringly solid presence at the centre of it all.
JUNIOR BAKE OFF
5PM, CH4 ★★★★
Is a Jaffa Cake a biscuit or a cake? The debate rages on in the first of a new series of this delightful show, in which the 16 juniors try to bake their own in between chats with gently surreal host Harry Hill. Judge Liam Charles points to the name of the treat, and to the fact that they’re making it on cake day, as a definitive answer.
DEATH IN BOLLYWOOD
9PM, BBC2 ★★★
In 2013, the actress Jiah Khan was found dead in her Mumbai flat. The police believed her death to be a suicide, brought on by the behaviour of her Bollywood actor boyfriend, Sooraj Pancholi, a crime that is chargeable under Indian law, and which he denies. This intriguing new series follows Jiah’s family’s search for truth.
999: WHAT’S YOUR EMERGENCY?
9PM, CH4 ★★★
This frontline series returns for a new, four-part stint with South Yorkshire Police. It was filmed just as the pandemic started to take effect, and fear is the prevailing theme in episode one as the police are called to the bedsit of an elderly man whose home is under siege. ROBIN WIGGS
9PM, 5STAR ★★★
‘I literally paid zero for my bills.’ Saving money with a smile is the drift of a new series that introduces us to Scarborough mum Aimee (left), who has become an expert in supermarket coupons and cashback websites. There’s also Alison, who decorates her home with rubbish.
