IN NUMBERS: The FA Cup

-

With every FA Cup third-round tie being shown across the weekend – on BBC1, BBC iplayer,

FA Player and BT Sport – we look at some figures relating to the famous competition…

1871 The year the FA Cup was founded; it’s the world’s oldest football cup competition. London club Wanderers beat a Royal Engineers side 1-0 in the 1872 final.

1 The number of non-english teams to have lifted the trophy. Step forward

Cardiff City, who won in 1927. Only the five Welsh teams that play in English leagues are eligible to play in the Cup.

5 The number of actual FA Cup trophies there have been. The original was stolen from the window of a sports shop in Birmingham in 1895, when the holders were Aston Villa. The 1911 Cup was valued at £1 million on Antiques Roadshow in 2016.

14 The record number of times Arsenal have won the competition, including last year, when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final. That day, Mikel Arteta (centre) became

just the 18th man to win the trophy as both a player and a manager. Arsenal begin the defence of the trophy against Newcastle United this afternoon (5.20pm, BBC1).

1 The number of non-league sides to have lifted the Cup. Tottenham Hotspur, then of the Southern League, won in 1901 after beating Sheffield United in a replay. Can any of the four remaining non-league sides – Marine, Stockport County, Chorley or Boreham Wood – equal that feat this year?
