MOVIE OUTSIDE THE WIRE

(2021) 15 u ★★★

In the Marvel films,

Anthony Mackie plays the flying super-soldier Falcon – in Netflix’s Outside The Wire, he plays android supersoldier Leo, tasked with finding a doomsday device before it’s too late. Expect plenty of cool robot fighting scenes from this near-future thriller, which also has a role for Borgen’s Pilou Asbaek. From Friday.

AMAZON PRIME

MOVIE HUGO (2011) ★★★★ A boy (Asa Butterfield) loses his dad in 1930s Paris in this dreamily nostalgic hug of a film from Martin Scorsese. It’s about how things fit together, and is a celebration of cinematic pioneers, too. From tomorrow.

ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI

MOVIE (2020) 15 ★★★★ In 1964, Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and the NFL’S Jim Brown met behind closed doors after Clay beat Sonny Liston, just as he was about to become Muhammad Ali. Regina King’s deft drama imagines what was said between these four black icons – some of it banter, some of it pushing deep into race and life. From Friday.

uNEW! AMERICAN GODS

(Season 3, Episode 1) ★★★

War is always coming in this stylish adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s gods-on-earth fantasy, and season three is no exception. As we begin, Wednesday (an ever watchable Ian Mcshane, left) tries to bring Shadow back to his side. A new episode arrives every Monday.

COMEDY TOGETHER

(All six episodes) ★★★ Jonny Sweet writes and stars in BBC3’S romcom about two people destined to be together, but whose chaotic family and friends make that a challenge.

SKY / NOW TV

NEW! WESTWORLD (Seasons 1-3) ★★★★ HBO’S sci-fi western had a brilliant first season, spun its wheels for the second, then went somewhere interesting and action-packed for its third. Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton are among its enormous cast. From Friday.

BREEDERS

COMEDY (Season 1)

★★★★ Having young children who don’t sleep will bring out the devil in anyone, and that premise is at the heart of Sky’s dark comedy with Daisy Haggard and Martin Freeman. It’s due back for a new series later this year.

DISNEY+

NEW! WANDAVISION (Season 1) ★★★★ Marvel’s new superhero drama is an intriguing departure. It opens on Vision and Scarlet Witch (Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen) as they enjoy a pictureperfect 1950s sitcom existence, but surely, everything isn’t as it seems? For one thing, Vision is dead. The cast filmed the sitcom part in front of a studio audience to really capture that vintage atmosphere, with the crew in 1950s clothing, and Dick Van Dyke’s brains were even picked during production to help to nail down the detail. That kind of commitment bodes well. From Friday.

BEST OF THE REST

NEW! SERVANT

(Apple TV+) ★★★ The return of this disturbing thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, set inside the home of a grieving couple where a nanny begins work under odd circumstances. Brace yourselves for the twists, and for Rupert Grint’s lecherous character. From Friday.

NEW! FINDING JOY

(Acorn TV) ★★★ Season two of this generally chirpy comedy about the aftermath of a break-up, written by and starring Irish actress Amy Huberman (left). Season one was shown here on W. From Monday.

BEING A HUMAN PERSON

(2020) 15 u (BT TV Store, Sky Store, Virgin) ★★★★ Unexpectedly compelling documentary that follows Swedish director Roy Andersson as he makes his latest film. It’s a very moving account, not least for the way it reveals the role of alcohol in the 77-year-old’s life.

BODY OF WATER

(2020) 15 (Sky Store, Virgin) ★★★ Unflinching British drama about the awkward relationships between a woman recovering from an eating disorder (Sian Brooke) and her mother (Amanda Burton). Both from Monday.
