CELEBRITY BEST HOME COOK

9PM, BBC1 ★★★★ Back for a new, celebrity-driven series comes the warm and cuddly cooking contest we can all relate to. Ten celebrities, including Ed Balls (right), Ferne Mccann, Gareth Thomas and Rachel Johnson, will attempt to win over judges Mary Berry, Angela Hartnett and Chris Bavin with their hearty home cooking. Their dishes might be rated tasty by their friends and family, but in the studio, the pressure quickly mounts. After Mary’s Ultimate round and Chris’s Rustle Up challenge, who will face Angela’s Eliminator, which will see someone sent home? Continues tomorrow.

SECRET SAFARI: INTO THE WILD

8PM, CH4 ★★★★ This new series follows the dedicated rangers at Kenya’s Ol Pejeta nature reserve as they tend to the wild animals under their care, from hippos and elephants to lions and hyenas – even cocktail ants are precious. In this episode, the hunt is on for a missing lioness, while rhino Lola’s new calf is in need of protection.

CHINA AND THE PANDEMIC

9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

This two-part documentary goes back to the beginning of the pandemic and right to its source in Wuhan, China. We hear from doctors, scientists and journalists as they unpick the truth about what Chinese officials knew early on about Covid-19, and what they were willing to admit to the world.

MARCELLA

9PM, ITV ★★★★

Anna Friel is back for a third series of the Nordic noir-style crime drama – and she’s got a new look. Undercover in Belfast, she is using the alias Keira Devlin to get up close and personal with the ruthless Maguire crime family. As events escalate in this opening double bill, you have to wonder how troubled Marcella will cope. SA

ARCHITECTURE THE RAILWAYS BUILT

8PM, YESTERDAY ★★★★ ‘As the train crosses from Devon into Cornwall, it makes my heart fly.’ Tim Dunn (left) is in the Tamar Valley and marvelling at the Royal Albert Bridge, designed by Brunel and opened not long before his death. Dunn also visits the station at Gallivare in Sweden, 62 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

ROBERT BURNS: NO HOLDS BARD

9PM, SKY ARTS ★★★

This irreverent dive into the work of the Scottish poet is the opposite of a dusty survey, and is entirely suitable to the passion of his work. ‘He’s just awful, isn’t he, this is just straight out of a rhyming dictionary,’ reflects contributor Jeremy Paxman (left) as he grimaces through Burns’s poems.

FRANKIE DRAKE MYSTERIES

9PM, ALIBI ★★★

A woodland scavenger hunt is the setting for murder as this breezy Canadian mystery begins its new, fourth season. Luckily, private eye Frankie (Lauren Lee Smith, left) is on hand to help, and so is her mother, although mum’s brand of ‘help’ is rarely so straightforward.

RHOD GILBERT’S GROWING PAINS

9PM, COMEDY CENTRAL ★★★★ Strictly champion Bill Bailey (left) is one of the three guests gamely digging up cringeworthy teenage memories for Gilbert’s nostalgic new chat show, along with AJ Odudu and Tom Allen (because all shows must have him now). It’s a nice idea for a series, and the reality of it is warm and funny.

A YEAR ON HELVELLYN

9PM, BBC4 ★★★★

Some stunning photography helps to capture the majesty of the Lake District mountain in this new, one-off documentary from Terry Abraham, who also captures the human side of the story well. We hear from a paragliding instructor who hopes ‘to land right next to the pub if all goes well’.

DEAD PIXELS

10PM, E4 ★★★

The deft computer game comedy is back for a new series, and its outdoorsaverse characters are tucking into a new expansion pack for their favourite dungeon adventure. For one of them, though, games might not be enough any more, and this could herald a new life direction, with the help of flatmate Alison (Charlotte Ritchie, left). RW

THE CLASSIC FM CONCERT

8PM, CLASSIC FM HHH Other composers’ Requiems are full of wrath, fire and the fear of Hell; Faure’s Requiem is, however, serene and uplifting. John Suchet includes the full version of this great work in this concert celebrating a French composer whose music could be both reassuringly traditional as well as daringly modern. SJ
