WHY I HAD TO ISOLATE IN IRELAND
Although The Drowning is set in England, it was filmed in Ireland because it offered more easily accessible picturesque locations for the producers. They’d reached the halfway point when the project was shut down last March, before resuming again in the summer. By this point Jill was required to self-isolate when she arrived back in the Irish Republic, and it was only after a fortnight on her own that she could resume work.
Then it was another three weeks before she could return home to England and her son at the end of the shoot. ‘It was one of the hardest periods in my life,’ she recalls. ‘As a way of finding out how it feels to be desperately missing your son in the way Jodie is, it was pretty instructive. But I wouldn’t recommend it or be keen to do it again.’
