Angela Hartnett (right) admits that she sometimes struggles to take her professional chef’s hat off when judging Best Home Cook. ‘I can be a bit “cheffy” because I’ve got my restaurant head on,’ she laughs. ‘But Mary always brings me back to reality by saying, “Actually it doesn’t matter, this is home cooking” and we have a bit of a chuckle.’
That’s not to say she hasn’t doled out the odd ticking off. ‘There’ve been a couple of celebrities who haven’t let me finish what I’m saying,’ she reveals. ‘I try to tell them things, and they start giving me a reason why. I don’t really care about that. There’ve been a few of those,’ she laughs.
‘One pot’ fan Claudia says she considers a roast chicken every bit as celebratory as a complicated chocolate cake and believes that serving up good homely fare is a simple way to show love. ‘My eldest’s Alevels have just been cancelled, and I knew what he’d really like was a tuna melt [above], so I made him one. It’s a way of saying, “We’ll be all right.”’
