PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: SALAZAR’S REVENGE
(2017) 12 ◆ Saturday, 6.50pm, BBC1 ★★★ This fifth film in the boisterous swashbuckling franchise introduces some new blood – but fear not, Captain Jack (Johnny Depp) is back, too. Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites) is intent on freeing his father, Will, from the cursed Flying Dutchman, and Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario, above, with Thwaites) holds the key. An astronomer, Carina looks to the stars to locate the Trident of Poseidon, which has the power to lift all curses at sea. But undead Spanish Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his decaying crew want revenge on Jack Sparrow, who, as a cocky young pirate, caused Salazar’s downfall. Buckle up for a thrilling voyage – and watch out for a cameo from Paul Mccartney.

THE TRAIN (1964) PG ●
Sunday, 2.45pm, BBC2 ★★★★ The true story of the heroes who fought back when the Nazis stole priceless art from occupied France was told in 2014’s The Monuments Men, but John Frankenheimer’s superior drama got there first.
Not only is it a gripping tale with nail-biting action, it also features an intense psychological frisson between its two male leads: Burt Lancaster’s French Resistance man, Paul Labiche (above), and his Wehrmacht officer adversary, Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield). Labiche isn’t keen at first to risk his men’s lives on the dangerous task of stopping the train carrying art from Paris to Germany. Waldheim, however, has far clearer motives and a lethal determination to succeed. Waldheim’s brutality is all the persuasion that Labiche needs.
