2.45PM, RADIO 4 HHHH ‘When fitted on, my wooden leg was strapped by the knee,’ wrote Thomas Jackson, a 19thcentur­y British soldier. ‘I looked down with the same kind of satisfacti­on which a dog does when he gets a tin kettle tied to his tail.’ Thomas was just one of a vast regiment of men across Europe who were wounded and maimed during the years of war with France. Here, Peter White looks at disability in the 19th century, and hears how a wooden leg was seen as a sign of survival.
