A successful fortysomething couple are happy enough, but could they be missing something? Children, perhaps? Ellie and Pete (Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg, above) don’t seem all that sure, but they do get very emotional about youngsters lost to the care system, and sign up to be foster parents. There are no real light-bulb moments that lead them on a steady path to parenthood, and while the film does get a bit mushy attimes,itprimarilythriveson mishaps, mistakes and some hilarious plain-speaking (from Octavia Spencer’s care worker). Welcoming not one, but three siblings (teenager Lizzy, ten-yearold Juan and six-year-old Lita) into their home starts out just fine – but the honeymoon period is soon over.
