Mary Nighy and her mother, Diana Quick, star in this dramatisation of Rosamond Lehmann’s 1932 novella about a shy 17-year-old, from a quiet home, desperately trying to fit in at a daunting social event.

The documentary-maker Athar Ahmad grew up in west London, and went to a local secondary school that had a reputation for being rough. Like Athar, some pupils did well, but three of his classmates are now dead, having been brutally murdered. Every afternoon this week, Athar looks at the factors that took him and those classmates down such different routes.

The comedian Ross Noble claims he’s been misled when he turns up for this programme about rock, and finds himself in the company of palaeontologists and geologists; he was expecting the Rolling Stones. Once over the shock, Ross joins in on this science and entertainment show to find out how the study of rocks can tell us so much about the origins of Earth. SJ
