Today Weekend magazine celebrates the joy of reading to mark this year’s World Book Day on Thursday, when thousands of children dress up as characters from their favourite books and comics. In this special issue, we’ve gathered together Dennis the Menace and his friends at the Beano, and are sharing the wisdom of a library full of top children’s authors including David Walliams, JK Rowling, Ricky Gervais, Jacqueline Wilson and Julian Clary, who sing the praises of reading. World Book Day is all about changing children’s lives by encouraging them to read for pleasure – and to make it a habit for life. The World Book Day charity sends out 15 million £1 vouchers to young people through schools around the country, which they can exchange for a book of their own from a shortlist of 12. Spending just ten minutes a day reading and sharing stories with children can make a big difference to their development. Normally you’d see crowds of kids dressed up as Harry Potter, Superman,

Snow White or Wally from Where’s Wally? tripping along to school. This year’s a little different of course, but there’s nothing to stop you being creative and dressing up at home, and there are plenty of other ways to get involved by sharing stories with other children and helping to fundraise for kids both here in the UK and those living in the poorest communities around the world.

Reading is not just for children though, it’s for life, as the growth of book clubs proves, with many new ones springing up in lockdown, including one hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall. So also in this World Book Day Special we’ve highlighted some brilliant book adaptations, either available on demand now or coming to our screens soon, starting below with Daily Mail film critic Brian Viner’s movie choices. If you want to get ahead of the game then read the book before the show comes out. So are you sitting comfortably? Then read on...
