PICK OF THE DAY
GRACE 8PM, ITV ★★★★
This new, feature-length drama, adapted from a novel by Peter James, stars John Simm as the Brighton-based detective Roy Grace. Steadfast and intuitive, Grace is haunted by the disappearance of his wife six years ago, and has buried himself in cold cases. To some, he has lost his touch; to others, he is wasting his talents. When his colleague, DS Branson (Richie Campbell, near right, with Simm), asks for Grace’s help with the case of a man last seen in a coffin as part of a stag night prank, Grace finds he has a natural affinity to the mystery, and to the groom’s desperate fiancee.
ANTIQUES ROADSHOW 7PM, BBC1 ★★★★
This week’s show comes from Forty Hall, a Jacobean manor house with leafy grounds in Enfield, north London. Among the eye-opening finds are a pair of miniature hands crafted by the artist Lucien Freud, while jewellery – including a rare wedding set from Nepal – also commands big gasps and bigger price tags.
TOP GEAR 8PM, BBC1 ★★★
Freddie Flintoff, Paddy Mcguinness and Chris Harris return for a new series of the entertainment-driven motoring show. Their first fourwheeled adventure is both nostalgic and emotional as they head to the Lake District – to reunite with their own dads’ old cars. Chris is also on the track in Lamborghini’s most powerful car, the hybrid Sian.
BLOODLANDS
9PM, BBC1 ★★★★
The hunt for Goliath reaches its climax tonight in this dour drama, which weaves an intricate mystery out of the Northern Ireland peace process and a long-buried case. DCS Twomey is behind bars, but James Nesbitt’s DCI Brannick has been pulling the strings. Is Brannick a bad cop, or is he playing a different game? SA
