5.30PM, RADIO 3 ★★★★ The bandoneon player and composer Astor Piazzolla was born 100 years ago, and is still considered the devil incarnate by some citizens of Buenos Aires because he dared to write new tangos. His dramatic, innovative music became known as nuevo tango and even today, old-school dancers will flounce off if a Piazzolla track is played. In this programme, we hear some of Piazzolla’s great but divisive music.

Simon Rattle takes to the rostrum at the Royal Albert Hall to conduct the London Symphony Orchestra for three symphonies by Igor Stravinsky. The concert ends with the Russian composer’s bold and dynamic Symphony In Three Movements. It was written during the Second World War, when the composer was in exile in the US. He referred to this turbulent piece as his War Symphony.
