PAUL O’GRADY: FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS

8PM, ITV ★★★★

Paul is back in his element, at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, for a new run of his heart-warming show. Paul dishes out plenty of hugs as he meets some of the animals waiting to be rehomed. First up, there’s four-month-old shih tzu Daisy, who’s about to have surgery, while gentle giant Lizzie (right) is rather more of a handful. Much as he’d like to, Paul can’t give all the dogs he meets a home. One person who is in the market for a new furry house guest is Spice Girl Geri Horner, and she’s got her eye on one very lucky pup.

SHETLAND 9PM, BBC1

★★★★

Guilt is everywhere in this final episode of the sixth series, and it seems to be infectious. The guilty party in the murder of Alex Galbraith is revealed and brought to justice, but the case is far murkier than the death of just one man. And, even in death, Donna Killick finds a way to cause yet more pain. The series will return.

UNIVERSE 9PM, BBC2

★★★★

Hold on to your hats – Brian Cox is taking us on a mindbending journey inside a black hole. He tells the story of Sagittarius A*, a supermassive black hole with its origins some 13.6 billion years ago. Once considered theoretical, black holes are now changing the way scientists think about the universe – and reality itself.

GRAND DESIGNS: HOUSE OF THE YEAR
