PICK OF THE DAY
MARY BERRY – LOVE TO COOK
8PM, BBC2 ★★★★ Food made for sharing is the theme of this episode as Mary fires up our senses with generous dishes to feed a crowd – and what bigger crowd than football fans on match day? Mary visits the Liverpool bakery doing just that; it was saved by its local community from demolition, and is now a thriving social enterprise. On a slightly smaller scale, she meets the man smoking hunks of kosher meat in his back garden, while back home, she prepares dishes including a delicious platter of sticky soy and ginger pork (right).
CAROL KLEIN’S GREAT BRITISH GARDENS 7PM, CH5
★★★
This week, Carol visits the Beth Chatto Gardens near Colchester in Essex. Beth, who died in 2018, was a pioneering plantswoman who created a rich and complex garden in one of Britain’s driest areas. Most famously, she transformed a car park into her droughtresistant Gravel Garden.
NADIYA’S FAST FLAVOURS 8.30PM, BBC2
★★★
Nadiya Hussain is going back to her Bake Off roots for an episode devoted to sweet treats and breads, all with her unique flavour combinations. A custard tart with a creme brulee twist sounds divine, and she does delightful things with shortbread – but you might need some convincing when it comes to her sweet focaccia.
SURGEONS: AT THE EDGE OF LIFE
9PM, BBC2 ★★★★ In this episode, we meet 30year-old Dannee, whose cough and breathing difficulties were first diagnosed as Covid. The reality was much more chilling, and cardiothoracic surgeon Aman Coonar steps in to save her life. The second, similarly complex operation requires not one, but two surgeons to remove and reconstruct. SA
