THE REITH LECTURES 9AM, RADIO 4
★★★★ Weapons that can locate and select human targets, controlled entirely by artificial intelligence (AI), already exist and could be used in warfare. In theory, these weapons might reduce collateral damage and civilian casualties – but they might also kill on an apocalyptic scale. Stuart Russell continues his lecture series on the dangers and benefits of AI, and argues for global control of autonomous weapon systems.
JOHN FINNEMORE’S DOUBLE ACTS
11.30AM, RADIO 4 ★★★★ Michael Palin joins forces with comedy writer John Finnemore for this two-hander. Michael plays Percy, an old-school signalman with a sideline in poetry. John plays Alec, another steam railway
buff, who encourages Percy to read his verse out loud. What, though, is Alec’s motive, and why is Percy wearing different socks? All these questions will be answered inside the Wroxton signal box.
THE CLASSIC FM CONCERT 8PM, CLASSIC FM
★★★ Carol Of The Bells was used in
Home Alone, and keeps cropping up in Christmas advertisements. This charming tune, originally a Ukrainian song and written in 1914, is fast becoming a Christmas staple. John Suchet includes it in this selection of Christmas music and carols, as well as Berlioz’s lilting The Shepherds’ Farewell.
