PICK OF THE DAY
RISE OF THE NAZIS: DICTATORS AT WAR 9PM, BBC2
★★★★★
It’s easy to dismiss dictators as lunatics, but they rise to the top for a reason, and the complicity of the people around them is a big part of that story. This new series about the war on the Eastern Front explores that arrogant strategic mistake from the perspectives of both Hitler and Stalin, and digs into the psychologies of the leaders and their underlings. It’s an enlightening route through familiar territory, and the opening detail, about Hitler’s pilgrimage to Napoleon’s sarcophagus in conquered Paris in 1940, is a great starting point.
SHAKESPEARE & HATHAWAY 2.15PM, BBC1
★★★
The gently humorous mystery is back for a new series that continues every weekday.
The first case for private eyes Shakespeare (Jo Joyner) and Hathaway (Mark Benton) takes them to a tech firm where sabotage is afoot, and where almost every member of staff has a flamboyant hairstyle.
CELEBRITY EGGHEADS 6.30PM, CH5
★★★
In a new series of the quiz, the team of ‘hard-boiled brainiacs’ are challenged by Jon Bentley, Anne Diamond, Kemi Majeks and Gyles Brandreth, who is wearing a jumper emblazoned with his own first name. The opening round is sport, which is met with dismay from the celebrities – will they find later categories more appealing?
THE MILLIONAIRESS AND ME 10PM, CH4
★★★★ Film-maker Martin Read used to be homeless, and has forged an unusual friendship with the glamorous multimillionairess Amanda Cronin. They spend time in each other’s worlds in Read’s warm documentary, which has surprising moments of connection, including a shift for Amanda in a charity shop in Merthyr Tydfil.
