As a former Royal Marine and combat veteran, JJ Chalmers brings his own perspective to the extraordinary evacuation of Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in May and June of 1940. For this three-part series, JJ (right) is in France to chart the lead-up to the rescue mission, getting a feel for what life was like for soldiers trapped inland. Raksha Dave is at the secret bunker complex beneath Dover Castle to examine the planning and organisation of the vast fleet of ships – large and small – that brought the troops home.
