MOORS MURDERS: THE WITNESS

9PM, CH4 ★★★★ This instantly unsettling new series uses letters and eyewitness testimony to tell the story of the abduction and murder of five children by Myra Hindley and Ian Brady (right) in the mid-1960s. David Smith was married to Hindley’s sister, Maureen, and recalls seeing the killing of 17-year-old Edward Evans, and how normally Brady and Hindley treated the situation afterward. Smith helped to clean up the murder scene – ‘I would have done anything just to get out of that house’ – and the way he tells it, without any flourish, makes it all the more horrific.

MORNING LIVE 9.15AM, BBC1

★★★

ITV’S This Morning has been the gold standard for years, but the BBC’S equivalent, hosted from Salford by Kym Marsh and Gethin Jones, is a great alternative. It has the bright and breezy mix of news, features and recipes you’d expect, plus Dr Xand is on hand with medical advice – and it doesn’t have ad breaks.

RISE OF THE NAZIS: DICTATORS AT WAR 9PM, BBC2

★★★★★

The invasion of the Soviet Union is well under way in part two of this superb history and Hitler, like Napoleon before him, has started to taste defeat – and the bite of the Russian winter. The Nazi leader decides to push harder, and we also see his mounting mistakes from Stalin’s point of view.

NO RETURN 9PM, ITV

★★★★

In the penultimate episode of this tense thriller, young Noah makes his statement in Turkish court. He’s played very finely by Louis Ashbourne Serkis – son of The Lord Of

The Rings star Andy – so you can feel Noah’s tension as the accused teen awaits the judge’s response to his request for bail. ROBIN WIGGS
