The Coen brothers’ wry satire of Hollywood’s

Peter Weir’s period blockbuster isn’t entirely faithful to the content of Patrick O’brian’s historical novels, but the spirit is there.

John Wayne plays a Missouri moonshiner harbouring some deep resentment for the absent father he holds responsible for his mother’s death. The arrival of a stranger (Harry Carey) offers a new perspective.

Ansel Elgort is the getaway driver, plugged into his ipod, in a heist caper that is choreographed to the soundtrack’s beat. Lily James is the waitress worth fighting for.

A stand-alone superhero caper charting the back story of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (above). As it turned out, Wolverine’s swan song in 2017’s Logan (Friday, 11.20pm, Film4) is way more interesting than his origin story.
