★★★ Natterjack toads are small, mainly nocturnal and probably Europe’s noisiest amphibians. These amorous toads, known along the Sefton coast as ‘the Bootle organ’, make quite a racket at night in the mating season as they try to attract females. Brett Westwood hears how teams of volunteers work to prevent ardent toads from being killed when these amphibians attempt to hop busy roads to return to their breeding grounds.
