Charles Dexter Ward has disappeared from a secure psychiatric hospital. Ward’s many mysterious problems seem to be linked, in some weird way, to his wealthy family’s history. Two months later, Ward’s psychiatrist murders a woman and, or so it seems, these two incidents are linked. Alun Armstrong, Nicola Walker and Alex Lanipekun are among the cast for this 18-part supernatural thriller adapted from a novella by H.P. Lovecraft.

PAY FREEZES 8PM, RADIO 4

Winters have played their part in the wages of British workers. This three-part series, presented by Phil Tinline, begins with the winter of 1947, when Britain was battered and broke after the Second World War. Severe cold spells and snowfall – followed by a thaw and flooding – took a terrible toll. Phil investigates how the then Labour government persuaded unions to hold down pay demands, and businesses to hold down profits, in this punishing period.
