In this week-long drama, Derek Riddell plays John Reith, the BBC’S first director-general – a looming and prudish presence – with Romola Garai as Hilda Matheson, whom Reith appointed as director of talks, even though

they were rarely on speaking terms. Drawing on correspondence between Hilda and her lover,

Vita Sackville-west, this looks at the many clashes between two headstrong, visionary people.

Coppelia, has all the corps de ballet leaping about in boots, with the men dressed as Hussars and the women as well-turnedout peasants. It may not be the subtlest piece of music, but it’s mighty cheery, and closes tonight’s selection of recordings from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
