My weekend
What I’m watching... Whatever’s happening in the world, you always get a laugh out of the game show Would I Lie To You?. It’s great to go to bed on a laugh. I watch Countryfile too, if only to scream at the telly because they always seem to be in Gloucestershire and not in the difficult farmland in my neck of the woods, the Weald in East Sussex. What I’m reading... Miriam Margolyes’ memoir This Much Is True, and Bob Mortimer’s autobiography And Away. They’re both very funny, but in a way quite sad too, particularly Bob’s book.
What I’m listening to... I’m a big radio fan, particularly Radio 4, though I get the feeling they’re trying to appeal to a younger audience and that’s a mistake.
Radio 4 is its own animal which you just fall into. I got into it in my mid-30s. I love documentaries like Costing The Earth, which looks at
climate change issues, and Melvyn Bragg’s In Our Time which discusses the history of ideas.
My favourite walk... The Who might have been famous for driving the odd Roller into a hotel swimming pool back in the day, but now I prefer putting on my boots and going for a walk in the Witherenden Valley with its bumpy hills, lakes and little copses. I never tire of the landscape.
My weekend hobby... At my trout farm there’s now a taproom, which I decorated myself during the lockdowns – I’m a hands-on kind of bloke. It’s got a rustic shabby-chic feel. I like to stroll down there at weekends. It serves craft beers made by a company set up by my son Jamie and two son-in-laws. My favourite beer is probably the American pale.
My favourite restaurant...
If I eat out I like to go to The Curlew, a Grade Ii-listed former coaching inn in the village of Bodiam in Sussex, near Bodiam Castle. The young chefs serve great food, and the tasting menu is excellent.
As told to York Membery Visit lakedownbrewing.com to book a table in the taproom, or to order three, six and 12-month beer subscription boxes.
