PICKOFTHEDAY

-

WATERLOO ROAD 8PM, BBC1 ★★★

Tuning into this series of the rebooted school drama, viewers no longer of school age – or no longer with school-age children – might marvel at how things have changed. Bunking off to drink cider in the park or sneaking around behind the bike sheds to smoke and snog are not the main activities of these fictional teens, who have far more earnest concerns. But this show isn’t alone in sparking difficult conversations from the topics it broaches – Grange Hill was doing it 40 years ago. Tonight, Samia is shocked by what the boys have been discussing on a group chat. And she’s not wrong to be upset.

KIRSTIE AND PHIL’S LOVE IT OR LIST IT 8PM, CH4

★★★

A home is much more than bricks and mortar. We know location counts, but having good neighbours can also make a huge difference. That’s how Lexie feels about her Nottingham home, and she’s reluctant to move on to the bigger house that her partner Ed thinks their family of six needs. Can Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer help them to break the stalemate?

SORT YOUR LIFE OUT WITH STACEY SOLOMON 9PM, BBC1 ★★★

‘I have a strange addiction to wanting to sort people’s houses out.’ That’s not a bad habit to have, Stacey. This week, the presenter and her gang of fixers and organisers (below) are in Haslemere, Surrey, to help grandmother-of-six Sue. She has 40 years’ worth of clutter in her house, and every room is piled high – there’s even stuff in the bath andcoveringhalfof Sue’s bed. She will have to say goodbye to at least two-thirds of the surplus if she is to make room for what really matters – her daughters and their children, and precious family memories. There won’t be a dry eye in the decluttered house when the project is finished – and there’s an emotional surprise in store for Sue, whose mum was a massive fan of Irish crooner Daniel O’donnell.

SURGEONS: AT THE EDGE OF LIFE 9PM, BBC2 ★★★★

This series is compelling viewing, if you have the stomach for it, with emotional highs and nail-biting tension during each of the surgeries featured. Tonight, two patients have tumours removed and, in both cases, the risks are terribly high. Forty-year-old Sam has neurofibromatosis, an exceedingly rare genetic disorder that causes tumours to grow from his nerves

(it’s as painful as it sounds). His latest of many operations is to remove tumours in his neck that are precariously close to his spinal cord. Nineteen-year-old Jamie, meanwhile, was diagnosed with testicular cancer eight months ago. He’s having surgery to remove a swollen lymph node located in his abdomen, close to the vena cava, the largest vein in the body. Blood loss is a very real concern for both patients and at Addenbrooke’s, they get through 150 litres of blood a week. Where does it come from? Tonight, we also find out what it takes to get life-saving supplies from donors’ arms into the hospital’s 37 operating theatres.

NEXT LEVEL CHEF 9PM, ITV1

★★★ Restaurant kitchens rely on teamwork to get the dishes done and so far in this competition, the cooks have worked in teams to tackle the challenges together. Tonight, the eight remaining chefs are thrown a curveball – they are now going solo, so it’s every chef for themselves! It’s a chance for each of them to show they can really step up to the plate as they take on the seafood challenge.
