MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE

- From Thursday, Netflix

VICTORIAN DETECTIVE DUO

‘A lady should always act like a lady,’ says Miss Scarlet in a lively and funny chalk-andcheese detective series set in 1880s London. When she’s not keeping up her image as one of the gentry, Eliza (Peaky Blinders’ Kate Phillips, right, centre) solves crime with her own agency and, occasionally, the help of a boozy police officer – William ‘The Duke’ Wellington. The latest, third series opens with a Jonathan Creek-style case of a vanished magician, and finds Miss Scarlet striking a deal with a hilariously shady reporter (Oliver Chris). Series 1-2 already available; series 3 from Tuesday, Sky/now

OBSESSION A FATHER’S FORBIDDEN LUST

Based on a novel by Josephine Hart about a politician destroyed by an affair with his son’s fiancée, Damage has already been adapted for the screen once – as a film in 1992, starring Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche. Netflix’s series changes the title to Obsession and stars Richard Armitage as the family man who starts making eyes at his son’s girlfriend, Anna (Happy Valley’s Charlie Murphy). And she more than makes eyes back at him, too. Longing looks, innuendo and rampant sexual tension are there right from the start of this series, which places the power firmly in the hands of the woman, and jumps right into it all without explaining a tremendous amount. But there isn’t really much to explain – that’s obsession for you. See feature, page 8. From Thursday, Netflix

FLORIDA MAN SUNNY PLACE, SHADY PEOPLE

When Mike Valentine, a disgraced cop with a gambling habit (The Undoing’s Edgar Ramirez), is sent to track down a mobster’s missing girlfriend, little does he imagine the trail will lead to his home state of Florida, a place he’s spent all his life trying to escape. Soon, Mike is caught up in a dangerous treasure hunt that tips over a barrelful of family secrets. This glitzy, grimy, seven-part slice of neon noir has the feel of an Elmore Leonard novel, crammed with lowlifes against a muggy backdrop of palm trees and sharp wit. Look out for Without A Trace’s Anthony Lapaglia as Mike’s dad, Sonny.
