GREAT EXPECTATIONS LAST WOMAN ON EARTH WITH SARA PASCOE POMPEII: THE DISCOVERY WITH DAN SNOW
9PM, BBC1
‘The moment has come, Pip, the most important moment of your life.’ The third episode of Steven Knight’s gritty adaptation of the classic Dickens novel begins with Mr Jaggers (Ashley Thomas) coming to take a rather foul-mouthed Pip, played by Fionn Whitehead, to his new life in London, where he will learn to become a gentleman. By Jaggers’s side, Pip sees a dark and violent side to the city – and to life itself – while Estella and Miss Havisham clash over him.
9PM, BBC2
On paper, this show’s premise is a little bit uninspiring: Sara learns how to do some of the world’s most endangered jobs. But the comedian, who manages to bring chaos wherever she goes, elevates this concept to something more entertaining than it sounds. For the first episode of the second series, she travels to Greece (wearing very on-trend heart-shaped sunglasses), where she spends time with a family of bell-makers – bell-making, it turns out, is a very dangerous vocation. Sara (below) also meets the last monk left in a monastery and heads to
Antia, where she spends time with villagers who communicate with each other by whistling, before watching them taking part in a risky ancient tradition.
9PM, CH5
When Mount Vesuvius erupted one autumn morning in 79AD, the Roman city of Pompeii and its inhabitants were buried beneath tons of volcanic ash, creating what is arguably the greatest archaeological time capsule on Earth as buildings, artefacts andbodiesremained preserved as they were at the time of the eruption, waiting to be rediscovered. Dan heads to the Bay of Naples in Italy to tell the story of how Pompeii was unearthed in the 18th century, beginning with the incredible dig that saw miners finding a forgotten theatre. Watching this, it’s startling to realise how similar we are to the ancient Romans – from the wealthy woman who ran her own bath-house business to a fast-food bar where the menu was showcased on the walls. Plus, Dan reveals how British bombers nearly blew Pompeii to pieces during the Second World War.
