Picks of the week
Arriving on ITVX on Monday, a batch ofusboxsets you won’t find anywhere else. Here’s our pick of the best on offer…
THE SON epic western
Before Yellowstone,
Pierce Brosnan had a go at reviving the epic TV western, and the former Bond did a decent job of it, too. Like Yellowstone, this is also set in different time periods – 1849 and 1915 – and follows Brosnan’s cattle rancher Eli Mccullough as he builds his empire in Texas. Brosnan looks majestically grizzled as the successful yet mercurial patriarch, with Jacob Lofland as the young Eli, fighting his way out of the dirt when he is made a slave to Comanche warriors. Exhilarating stuff.
CREEPSHOW spooky anthology
Like a gorier version of The Twilight Zone, this anthology series spin-off from the
1982 film is introduced by ghoulish prankster Creepshow Creep. Some tales are more icky than others – you might wanttosaveitfor Halloween.
THE SPOILS OF BABYLON
tv spoof show A hit-and-miss satire of those overblown TV epics of the 70s and 80s (think The Thorn Birds), this has lots of big names, such as Tobey Maguire,
Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell. Follow-up The Spoils Before Dying is also available.
BROCKMIRE small town, fresh start
The voice of many a bit-character in The Simpsons, Hank Azaria took top billing in this live-action sitcom. He’s a sports announcer who has a rethink of his life after a humiliating on-air meltdown.
FINDING JOY life-affirming comedy
Amy Huberman writes and stars in this quirky comedy, as Joy, a woman who survives a messy break-up by searching for joy in the least likely of places.
LODGE 49 california dreaming
Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s son Wyatt Russell stars as aimless surfer Dud in this offbeat comedydrama about finding a sense of belonging and purpose.
BANGERS & CASH: UNDER THE BONNET REMARKABLE RENOVATIONS
Bangers & Cash is a national TV treasure that revs up our love for vintage vehicles, and does so with heart and humour. Like The Repair Shop, its success is as much down to the people featured as to the renovated rust buckets themselves. This spin-off series, exclusive to
UKTV Play, follows some of the iconic cars featured in the series, including the Mini Cooper S from the first episode. And no, they don’t build them like that any more. From Thursday, UKTV Play
