BEYOND PARADISE

8PM, BBC1 ★★★★

DI Humphrey and DS Esther investigate a new case. Father Michael (One Day’s Joe Barnes), a teacher at St Barnabas’ School for Boys, has gone missing. Humphrey follows a suspicious-looking student who sneaks off along the cliffs, and might be able to aid the team with video evidence. Why was Father Michael on the nearby beach at night? And why was he behaving so strangely? Could it have something to do with the popular ghost story in the area, about the devil on the rocks? ‘You spend long enough in these hills and you begin to believe it,’ one local tells the DI. Spooky.

GARDENERS’ WORLD 8PM, BBC2

★★★★

Monty Don plants up a seating area filled with night-scented plants to enjoy in the warmer months, while Toby Buckland visits a springtime botanical paradise in Surrey, and we’re taken to explore the coastal garden of author Patrick Gale: a farmyard turned writing oasis in Cornwall.

PILGRIMAGE: THE ROAD THROUGH NORTH WALES 9PM, BBC2

It’s the last leg of the Pilgrims’ journey. Tom and Spencer join Sonali on a fast to celebrate Paryushana, a holy Jain festival. Next, the team visit the slate landscape of the Nantlle Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site. At their final stop on the mainland, they go to a medieval church dedicated to Celtic early Christian saints and collect a stone from the beach nearby, adding it to a collection of prayer stones and dedicating it to a loved one they have lost. It proves to be an emotional day for everyone as grief is processed and tears are unleashed.

AVOIDANCE 9.30PM, BBC1 ★★★

Worried he’ll become a pushover like his Lycra-clad father Jonathan (Romesh Ranganathan), Spencer takes jiu-jitsu classes. That’s not the only big change: Claire (Jessica Knappett) decides it’s about time for her ex, Jonathan, to meet new beau Brett (Matthew Lewis). The meeting might not go quite as smoothly as she hopes, though – what was she expecting?
