ALIAS GRACE (Netflix)

This transfixing true-crime miniseries is adapted from Margaret Atwood’s novel about a 16-yearold Irish immigrant and maid, Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon, left), who was convicted of murder in Canada in 1843. Is she innocent or guilty? A doctor is tasked with probing her mind to find out the truth.

THE CONFESSIONS OF FRANNIE LANGTON (ITVX)

In this adaptation of Sara Collins’s award-winning book, former slave Frannie (Karla-simone Spence, below) goes to work as a servant in Georgian London, where she has an affair with her mistress, Madame Benham (Sophie Cookson). But when Madame and her husband are found dead, Frannie is charged with their murder.

THE ESSEX SERPENT (Apple TV+)

Claire Danes brings flair to this gothic drama as Cora Seaborne (below), a widowed naturalist investigating whether an Essex village is being haunted by a monster. Cora’s scientific approach is at odds with the superstitious villagers – and caught in between them is the local pastor (Tom Hiddleston).

DEATH COMES TO PEMBERLEY (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, UKTV Play)

Jane Austen fans will enjoy this three-part adaptation of PD James’s sequel to Pride And Prejudice, starring Anna Maxwell Martin and Matthew Rhys as the now happily married Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy (left). Their domestic bliss is jeopardised when someone is murdered on their estate.

Miss SCARLET & THE DUKE (sky/now)

Peaky Blinders’ Kate Phillips plays Miss Scarlet, a headstrong detective in Victorian London with a penchant for sharp tailoring. She solves crimes alongside handsome police officer William ‘The Duke’ Wellington (Stuart Martin, above with Phillips) over four lively series; the duo’s sexual tension is palpable.
