G.I. BLUES

(1960) U ● 1PM, BBC2 ★★★ A double bill of Elvis Presley films starts with this, released after Elvis had completed his own military service.

The King of Rock ’n’ Roll stars as a tank crewman who has a sideline in singing. Juliet Prowse co-stars. In Blue Hawaii, which follows later at 11.10pm, Elvis is out of the Army and keen to focus on his surfing – and the ladies.

DOG 9PM, CH4

(2022) 12 ◆ ★★★★ Lulu the Belgian shepherd (right) joins the long list of famous screen canines – and she totally steals this comedy road movie from its human stars. She’s the military dog being escorted to her handler’s funeral by

Channing Tatum’s ex-army Ranger. At first, the two don’t get along, but you just know they’re going to bond by journey’s end…

THE RUNNING MAN (1987)

18 s 10.55PM, CH4 ★★★★ Long before The Hunger Games, there was this sci-fi adventure starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as a wrongly jailed convict fighting for his life before a live TV audience. Tongue-in-cheek fun, it’s based on a Stephen King novel and is directed by Paul Michael Glaser

(formerly known as Starsky).

LATER… WITH JOOLS HOLLAND 9.50PM, BBC2

Jools is back for the 64th series of Later..., featuring his pick of top musical talent (and he rarely hits a wrong note). Elbow play tracks from their tenth LP, and front man Guy Garvey stops to chat with our host at the piano. Bristol-based punk rock band IDLES return to perform their softer songs, and twice-oscar-nominated English actress Samantha Morton makes her debut on the show as part of a synth-pop duo.
