Konnie to marry after whirlwind romance
ON paper they’re hardly the perfect match.
She is a Cambridge graduate best known in her role as a clean-cut Blue Peter presenter.
He is a college dropout who has made his name as a foul-mouthed TV critic.
Despite the differences, Konnie Huq and Charlie Brooker have become engaged after nine months together.
The pair had made plans to marry in Las Vegas during a month-long road trip around America. But they have been forced to put the holiday on hold after Miss Huq, 34, signed a deal on Monday to take over the Xtra Factor from Holly Willoughby. Miss Huq will join Simon Cowell today in Glasgow at the first auditions for the new series of the ITV2 spin-off show.
So far, her most high-profile romance has been with her former Blue Peter co-host Richard Bacon. They were together for six years before splitting in 2006. She left the show in 2008. She and Brooker, 39, met some years ago. She had appeared in an episode of his Screenwipe on BBC1 in 2008, but romance only flourished more recently.
A source close to the couple said: ‘Konnie and Charlie are very much in love. They got engaged some weeks ago, but have been trying to keep the news quiet.
‘They were going to go on holiday this Friday and were thinking of actually getting married in Vegas, but that has all been put on ice after Konnie got the Xtra Factor. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind week.’
Brooker, a writer and broadcaster, dropped out of the Polytechnic of Central London before completing his media studies degree.
