SPEAK­ING of the BBC, the news that Aun­tie is fac­ing a rapidly in­creas­ing num­ber of claims for sex and age dis­crim­i­na­tion by its fe­male staff doesn’t sur­prise me. Af­ter the out­cry last year over the ax­e­ing of Ar­lene Phillips from Strictly Come Danc­ing they hired Ju­lia Somerville (62), right, and Fiona Arm­strong (53) to read the news — but only on BBC 24, and only on short-term con­tracts. It was pa­thetic to­kenism, and it’s not good enough.
