LONDON, HOME TO ELDERLY SINGLES

Daily Mail - - sandra Parsons -

THERE are more widows than wives among women over 65 in London, the report found.

And the capital has nearly double the number of men and women who have never married than any other part of the country.

The ONS said the high numbers of single elderly people are partly a result of high levels of migration out of London by couples, both the retired and those who are still bringing up families. But the figures also appear to reflect the growing instability of couples and the increasing number of women who sacrifice marriage and family for careers.

The breakdown showed that only 37 per cent of women over 65 in London are married, while 42 per cent are widowed. Nowhere else in England are wives outnumbered by widows.
